The Welmoed range

The wines in the Welmoed range are led by varietal specifics, and placing quality ahead of price, these approachable wines combine a proud sense of history with Welmoed's distinctive, carefully-crafted approach.

The range comprises a Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Rosé, Pinotage, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and a non-vintage Charmat Brut which adds a dash of sparkle to any occasion.

Welmoed Heyden's Courage

Welmoed Red SealTo celebrate the wine industry's 350th year of existence, we have introduced a new reserve range, called Welmoed Heyden's Courage, comprising a white and red blend.

The farm Welmoed was first granted to Governor Simon van der Stel in 1690. Jacobus van der Heyden inherited the original Welmoed farm from mercenary Henning Hussing in 1696 and he owned it until 1725. Van der Heyden was unpopular with The Dutch East India Company after rebelling against Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel’s corrupt behaviour. When he refused to retract his statement that the governor was a crook, he was imprisoned and only released when his health deteriorated badly. Upon his release, the community reportedly said: “Deze vent heft wel moed (this chap does have courage)”.

Over the years, many great wines have been produced in the Welmoed cellar. Today, Welmoed maintains its proud winemaking tradition.
